Stay in Your Truth is about the unraveling of invisible abuse. The kind of abuse so under the radar that its victims have no idea it’s happening, but once it is seen, it can’t be unseen. And as soon as you cannot unsee it, you will have no other choice but to accept your new reality: a reality that the life you lived might have been a lie.
In her teaching memoir, Cathy invites readers into the life of a child adopted at 18 days old by parents who told her she was “special” and “loved more.” But if that was the case, why was she also told “children should be seen and not heard” and to “only speak when spoken to”? These lies–told to Cathy throughout her childhood by the two people who were supposed to protect her–became her relationship template for over 50 years. Not only are the 21 lies she discusses in her book the reasons why she was attracted to self-sabotaging and emotionally abusive people, those same lies kept her from realizing her true self.
